The Lok Sabha i.e. the lower house of the parliament, passed the Constitutional Amendment Bill on Wednesday, the 13th of August,2014. The Bill purports to scrap the existing collegium system of appointing Supreme Court and High Court judges. The house also passed the National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, 2014 that provides for regulation of the procedure of the appointment of judges.
The National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, 2014, was passed by the way of voice vote along with the 99th Constitution Amendment Bill that grants Constitutional status to the proposed Commission. The Constitutional Amendment Bill was passed with 367 votes in its favour and no oppositions to it. Although, the Members of the AIADMK abstained from voting.
The government said it to be a move for ensuring that only meritorious and deserving people are selected as judges in the higher courts.
