About the Organiser
The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, was established by the State Legislature of Punjab through the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab Act, 2006. The University received approval from the Bar Council of India in July 2006 and became the first and only National Law University to receive NAAC accreditation with an ‘A’ grade in May 2015.
The School of Agricultural Law and Economics (SALE) is a Centre of Excellence at RGNUL dedicated to teaching and research in agricultural law and economics. It integrates law, economics and policy to address issues relating to agricultural marketing, insurance, tenancy, credit, standardisation and international trade, with an emphasis on sustainability and environmental protection.
About the Competition
SALE, RGNUL is organising the National Legislation Drafting Competition 2026 on the theme “Assured Price Mechanism in the Agricultural Sector.”
Participants are required to draft a statutory framework that expands guaranteed price assurance, currently largely confined to paddy and wheat under the Minimum Support Price system, to a wider range of crops.
Theme and Problem Statement
The proposed legislation should seek to provide legislative solutions that encourage crop diversification, reduce dependence on water-intensive crops, address agricultural debt and farmer distress, and promote long-term environmental sustainability and rural employment.
Eligibility
- Participation is open to undergraduate law students enrolled in three-year or five-year B.A. LL.B. programmes and postgraduate LL.M. students.
- Participants must be enrolled in a recognised law college.
- Participation may be individual or in teams of a maximum of two authors.
- Cross-institutional teams comprising authors from different colleges or universities are permitted.
Competition Structure
This is an online, submission-based competition open to participants nationwide. Offline presence is not required for the drafting round. The shortlisted authors of the top 10 papers will present their work online.
Submission Guidelines
Participants must submit the final draft legislation in both Word (.docx) and PDF (.pdf) formats.
The submission must comply with the anonymity requirement. It must not contain the author’s name, institution or university name, contact details or logo. Only the assigned Team Code may be included in the top-right corner of the cover page. Non-compliance with the anonymity requirements will lead to immediate disqualification.
Formatting Guidelines
- Font: Times New Roman for the body text and footnotes.
- Main title/Act name: 16-point font.
- Chapter/Part titles: 14-point font.
- Sub-headings/section headings: 12-point font.
- Body text/statutory provisions: 12-point font.
- Line spacing: 1.5 for the body and 1.0 for footnotes.
- Footnotes/citations: 10-point font.
- Margins: 1 inch (2.54 cm) on all sides.
- Page numbers: Bottom centre of each page.
- Word limit: 10,000 to 12,000 words, excluding the cover page and footnotes.
- Citation style: OSCOLA (4th Edition) or Bluebook (20th/21st Edition), used uniformly.
Prizes
- Winner: INR 5,000.
- Second Prize: INR 3,000.
- Third Prize: INR 1,500.
- Special recognition: Authors of the top 10 papers will be invited to present their work online.
