About the Organisation
The Centre for Communication Governance (CCG) at National Law University Delhi was established in 2013 to promote meaningful engagement with information technology law and policy in Indian legal education and contribute to improved governance and policymaking.
CCG is undertaking research on the implications and harms of non-consensual synthetic imagery (NCSI), with a particular focus on the experiences of women in the socio-political context of the Global South.
About the Opportunity
CCG is inviting applications for a part-time, short-term contractual engagement involving design and illustrations for its ongoing research project on the gendered impacts of artificial intelligence.
The project’s forthcoming report examines the social, political, technological and legal implications of NCSI, including its impact on women’s dignity, privacy, autonomy, safety, participation and ability to engage in public and digital spaces.
The selected designer will work with the CCG team to develop thoughtful, accessible and research-responsive designs and illustrations while retaining their distinctive creative voice. The outputs may be displayed at the report launch and reproduced, with appropriate attribution, in the report and associated communications and outreach materials.
Roles and Responsibilities
The selected designer will be expected to conceptualise and develop original designs and illustrations responding to the themes and findings of CCG’s research on NCSI and its impact on women in the Global South.
The engagement will also involve translating complex themes relating to identity, consent, agency, technology, power, gender, privacy and harm into accessible visual forms; participating in discussions with the CCG team; incorporating relevant feedback through an iterative process; and developing design elements suitable for physical, print, digital and online formats.
The designer may also be required to undertake other artistic, visual or creative work reasonably connected with the project, as mutually agreed with CCG, and adhere strictly to the agreed deliverable timelines.
Deliverables
The deliverables will include five to six original illustrated designs developed in response to the project themes, together with high-resolution and open/editable files suitable for reproduction and adaptation.
The selected designer will also be expected to develop approximately six to eight smaller illustrations to complement the main illustrations, design and research text. These may be used in the report, on social media and in other project-related communications.
Print-ready and digital versions of all design outputs, as well as open files for the final outputs, will be required. Any additional design adaptations or related creative assets will be mutually agreed upon by the artist and CCG.
The commissioned outputs will be created specifically for CCG’s project. CCG-NLUD will have the right to use, reproduce, publish, display, distribute, communicate, adapt, modify, resize, crop, digitise and otherwise utilise the outputs, in whole or in part, for purposes connected with the Centre and its projects, with appropriate attribution to the artist.
Eligibility
- Applicants must submit a portfolio showcasing relevant experience and accomplishments supporting the required deliverables.
- Experience in original illustration, design and art, exhibitions, commissions, installations, visual campaigns, publications or other creative projects will be considered favourably.
- Applicants should be able to engage with complex social, political, technological or research-based themes and translate them into compelling artistic work.
- Applicants should be able to work across physical and digital mediums, adapt outputs for different formats, meet agreed timelines and incorporate feedback through an iterative process.
- Applicants should be able to work collaboratively with researchers, communications professionals and other members of the CCG team while maintaining an independent artistic perspective.
- Applicants should be able to engage thoughtfully and sensitively with themes involving gender, privacy, technology-facilitated harms and non-consensual imagery.
Preference may be given to applicants with experience relating to gender, technology, human rights, digital rights, identity or social justice; visual design or illustration for reports, publications, research projects, exhibitions or public displays; or work with research institutions, civil society organisations, academic institutions or similar organisations.
Duration and Mode
This is a part-time engagement for an initial period of two months, proposed to run between October and November. The engagement may be extended based on project requirements, satisfactory performance, availability of funds and the needs of the project. Candidates should be willing to start immediately.
Location
The engagement is with the Centre for Communication Governance at National Law University Delhi. The source material does not specify a separate work location or working arrangement.
Remuneration
The selected designer will be engaged on a contractual basis and paid remuneration based on agreed deliverables and milestones. Payment will be subject to the satisfactory completion and approval of the agreed deliverables by CCG-NLUD.
