Common Law Admission Test – 2017 yesterday uploaded the preference list of the NLU’s chosen by the students. With a lot of legal pundits making an analysis of the CLAT preference  list to determine the ranking of NLU’s, a confusion is bound to happen.

Though different learned gurus chose their own standard of making an analysis, quora and other social media sites witnessed a lot of chaos over the preference ranking.

Lawlex has also attempted to put some light on the CLAT-2017 National Law Universities preferences and has made an elaborate analysis. The criteria chosen by us is, calculating the average of Ranks of the total UN Reserved Seats in each NLU. The reason being that most of the NLU’s have one or the other reservation policy thereby fluctuating the preference list.

In the All India Candidate Seats, as per CLAT-2017 brochure, we have excluded the domicile reservation and SAP seats, in order to give a clearer picture. The lowest average means that TOP Rankers have selected that National Law University. The analysis done by us is only indicative in nature.

NLSIU Bangalore has retained the top position followed by NALSAR Hyderabad, WBNUJS, NLIU Bhopal and NLU Jodhpur. Gujrat National Law University has secured the sixth preference which is expected considering is growing legacy. MNLU Mumbai is the seventh preference superseding HNLU Raipur, RGNUL, RMNLU and other established NLU’s which is commendable considering that it is the second year that it has joined CLAT.

NUALS Kochi, RGNUL Patiala and RMNLU Lucknow share a similar stage with very less difference between their average ranks. It is interesting to note that MNLU Nagpur which for the first time joined CLAT, has surpassed five old NLU’s and stood at 13th rank.

It is also interesting to note that Rank 4 candidate has chosen WBNUJS over Bangalore and Hyderabad. Top ranker (AIR 1) has chosen NLSIU Bangalore nodoubt, whereas 26th AIR holder has preferred NALSAR making it clear that NLSIU is the undefeatable leader in the NLU race.

*Errors and omissions excepted (E&OE) * All data for analysis has been taken from official CLAT website.
