ICC Institute Conference on Sovereign Debt: the Legal, Economic and Policy Challenges

Tuesday 28 May 2013

International Chamber of Commerce

38, Cours Albert 1er, 75008, Paris, France

Conference Highlights

This international conference on sovereign debt is essential and timely. Economic, policy and legal experts representing public and private sectors from both sides of the Atlantic will join efforts to address the top issues on the agenda of policy makers, litigators and financial institutions in relation to sovereign debt.

World class experts will address, in interactive roundtable discussions, topics such as:

  • Is national or world growth still achievable when debtor countries are carrying debt stocks that exceed substantially GDP? Are there limits to a democratically-elected government’s over-indebting its country to the point of saturating its fiscal space and thus precluding further access to the market in case of emergency: financial crises, war, etc.?
  • Creditor legal remedies against sovereigns: the pari-passu controversy, with representatives of hedge funds and sovereign borrowers debating their claims in a live session.
  • Organizing in an orderly approach an international regime for State bankruptcy: a focus on the IMF Sovereign Debt Restructuring Mechanism and similar international initiatives.
  • Litigating and arbitrating sovereign debt disputes before national courts and arbitral tribunals.

Who should attend?

Organized by the renowned ICC Institute of World Business Law, this full-day conference will offer a unique debating forum to central and commercial bankers, academics, in-house and external counsel, litigators and arbitrators, and policy makers around the world.
