About The Journal
The LawLex Environmental Law Review (LELR) is a newly born online journal being published by the research and educational organization LawLex, which aims at publishing annually, articles on a broad range of environmental affairs, such as land use; air, water, and noise regulation; toxic substances control; radiation control; energy use; workspace pollution; science and technology control; and resource use and regulation. LELR draws upon environmental experts from government, academia, private practice, industry, public interest groups and students to cover legal developments at the local, state, national, foreign, and international levels. It invites authors to submit articles that investigate timely issues of environmental law and policy on an international, national, or local level. We do accept topics that borrow from or intersect with other areas of law, and particularly encourage articles presenting creative approaches to environmental problems.
LELR welcomes a variety of formats, including articles, essays, book reviews, and case comments. Information about all can be found below. In all cases, the Journal is committed to publishing pieces of the highest academic quality. Please note that because of the distinct nature of articles, analysis pieces and book reviews they all have a different submission, reviewing and preparation process. Note however the common policies in relation to formatting, production, copyright, open access, self-archiving, and conflict of interest.
Work submitted for publication must be previously unpublished and not under consideration for publication elsewhere and, if accepted, it should not then be published elsewhere in the same form or language. Please discuss with the editor-in-chief if they have previously been published elsewhere in another language. If previously published parts of text are to be included, the copyright-holder’s permission must have been obtained prior to submission. In submitting a piece for consideration by the Journal you must let us know if there is any conflict of interest.
We accept contributions in the form of articles, essays, notes and comments. LELR firmly believes in the importance of originality of ideas and therefore any material submitted to the Journal should not have been published elsewhere or be under consideration at any other publication.
Joint authorship is permitted upto 2 authors per submission.
Plagiarism in any form shall result in instant rejection of the submission.
The decision of the Board-of-Editors in this matter is final and binding. The Editorial Board of LELR shall not be responsible for any material that is libelous or scandalous and the author shall be deemed to have obtained the permission of the referred author in case the work is unpublished.

All submissions must contain an abstract of not more than 300 words, inclusive of 5 (five) keywords.
An article may be an exposition of lacunae prevailing in contemporary laws of any country, a comparative study of different laws, other publishing of research data and analysis in the area of environmental sciences and law. Along with articles engaging in current contemporary themes, pure theoretical works are also welcome. It is advisable that the article has a theme or a core argument around which it would ideally revolve.
The author is expected to make a comprehensive study of the subject and offer fresh innovative solutions for the same. The article should not exceed 10,000 words (inclusive of footnotes).
An essay, as opposed to an article is expected to be more concise and succinct in scope and ought to engage in a contemporary problem in the field of environmental sciences and law without indulging in excessive theorizing. The beauty of a good essay lies in the ability of the author to put forward original arguments, observations and criticisms without compromising on brevity. Moreover, an essay should ideally focus on a legal debate, interpretation of law(s)with a genuine approach to the problem.
It should essentially be a concrete and logical manuscript built around a specific/particular predicament. In other words, the norm is specificity rather than generality. An essay should not exceed 6,000 words (inclusive of footnotes).
3. Case Comment/Legislative Critique & Notes
The author may choose to critique an existing legislation which maybe an Act, Regulation, Rule, Scheme, Policy, Guideline etc. In the alternative, the author may also critique and analyze a bill which is tabled before the Parliament of any country. A case comment requires a thorough analysis of the various aspects of the legislation and may focus on the consequences of changes and amendments that would entail before and after its implementation (if the author suggests any).
A case comment/legislative critique should not exceed 3500 words (inclusive of footnotes).
4. Book Review
A book review shall ideally incorporate a complete analysis and an overview of the book, along with special reference to the original author‘s ideas, his writing style etc. Direct lifting of more than thirty words (i.e. a paragraph) from the book being reviewed is strictly discouraged and will result in immediate disqualification. The book being reviewed must pertain to core issues of environmental law or science. It must not date back to more than three years from its date of issue/ publication in the public domain. Although there is no strict word limit for a book review, it should be concise enough to provide the reader a holistic review of the book.
A book review should not exceed 3000 words (inclusive of footnotes).
All citations must be strictly in accordance with the Bluebook, 19th edition which can be accessed through its website. Keeping in mind the specifications of the Bluebook, speaking footnotes are discouraged.
The Review Process
By necessity the timing of the review process varies, but we aim to reply to authors within one to two weeks of receiving the submission. It is the Journal’s general policy to allow authors one week to accept or reject an offer of publication. In some circumstances this period may be shortened as deadlines approach.
When requesting expedited reviews of previously submitted articles, please do so via email to [email protected]. Please include “request for expedited review” somewhere in the subject line of the email.
- Initial Screening – All submissions are screened by the Editors to ensure that they are suitable for publication in the Journal.
- Peer Review – All substantive articles are subject to a double blind peer review process.
- Editing Process – All submissions selected for potential publication go through the following process:
- Initial Edit – Queries resulting from the editorial process will be addressed to authors electronically using track changes. Any significant changes should be made at this first stage.
- Final Edit – A final electronic draft will be sent to authors containing the version to be published. Only minor changes should be made at this second stage.
- Editing Timelines – Our guideline is four weeks turnaround by authors for the first stage of editing and two weeks by authors for the second stage.
- The authors, upon submission, communicate their acceptance of the following conditions:
- The work, upon publication, becomes the property of the Journal.
- Permissions for subsequent publication/reprint and/or derivative works must be obtained from the Editors of the Journal.
Copyright and Permissions
- The onus is on the authors to ensure that all relevant permissions have been obtained in respect of materials contained in their contribution to the Journal.
- Author(s) indemnify the Editors and the Editorial Committee of the Journal in respect of any claims arising from infringement of copyright.
- Author(s) must avoid making defamatory/injurious statements in their submissions that could result in libel claims and indemnify the Editors, Editorial Committee and publishers in respect of any defamation claims.
- The Editors may elect not to publish or may request the author(s) to exclude material which, in the Editors’ opinion, is of a defamatory nature.
Mode of submission of Research Paper
All research papers must be submitted electronically via email to [email protected] in the format mentioned above.
- The paper should be typed on standard A4 size page, with one-inch Margin on each side and has to be submitted in MS Word format.
- Font type: Times New Roman; Font size for body text: 12; Line spacing: 1.5.
- Font size for footnotes: 10; text of footnotes may be single-spaced however two separate footnotes should be double-spaced.
- A cover letter has to be submitted along with the paper, containing the following details:
a) Name of the author.
b) Contact details of the author.
c) Course being pursued by the author.
d) Name and address of the institution.
