Make A Difference is India’s largest youth volunteering network, with a national volunteer strength of around 1500 working with close to 4000 children at risk, across 23 cities in India.
Founded by college students in Kochin in 2006, this fairly young organisation has been able to leave an indelible mark in the society by its working style.
Currently, Make A Difference, better known as MAD, runs various projects, prominent among which are the English Project and the Placements Project.
The English Project mainly comprises imparting quality education to the children residing in shelter homes that MAD works with, ensuring that the students gain fluency in both their English writing and speaking skills.
In order to implement this, MAD follows specially customized Cambridge Curriculum which comprises Six Levels, on the completion of which the students get a certificate.
The English Project Volunteers are mainly college students or young professionals who visit the shelter homes either on a Saturday or Sunday and teach the kids for 2 hours.
The Placements Project is primarily designed to make the kids aware of the various career opportunities available to them by holding vocational skill-building and career-awareness workshops.
The duty of arranging for these activities is entrusted upon Placements Volunteers, lead by the Placements Fellow for the city.
Apart from this, volunteers may also apply for PR Internship if they are interested in Photography/Writing/Video Editing/Designing. PR Interns are responsible for covering various MAD events and activities throughout the year.
MAD also has a Computer Project, where children learn basic computer skills and a Library Project, with story telling sessions and getting them interested in reading books in general.
MAD also has an FoM chapter (Friends of MAD) in most of its cities that is responsible for fundraising activities, either through its Dream Tee project (which involves selling T-Shirts designed by MAD), its Community Fund Raising project (funds are raised by all volunteers from their friends, family, relatives and acquaintances), its Corporate Relations project (which is primarily responsible for setting tie-ups with corporations for periodic monetary grants) or its Events project (which raises funds by organizing unique and fun events that involve the community).
How can a college student help MAD
MAD is a platform which strives to turn young enthusiasts into leaders of tomorrow. A college student can start as a volunteer in either the English or Placements project, and upon completion of a year can apply for Fellowship in the city for any of the verticals (President, Operations, HR, PR, Placements etc).
Next, they can apply for the Regional team (leading all the cities in the North/South/Central/Deccan regions) and later may adopt complete leadership by applying for a post in the National Team! MAD allows for all the volunteers to apply for any post they wish to contribute towards as MAD believes in giving an opportunity to shine for one and all.
MAD chapters in Kolkata, Bhopal, Luckhnow, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Pune, among others, have especially seen a lot of enthusiastic participation from law students, with a considerable chunk of their volunteer base as well as Fellows’ teams hailing from the law schools present in and around these cities.
This is because not only does volunteering with MAD provide these law students with a refreshing break from the mundane routine of their academics and co-curricular activities and the cut-throat and sometimes self-centered environment of their campuses, but also broadens their social perspective, gives them an opportunity to engage with the community in their new adoptive cities and allows them to interact with fellow youngsters from diverse backgrounds, colleges and professions.
Recruitment’s are held multiple times a year, mostly in the months of July and August. For more information, interested applicants may visit <striking.ly/madvol>. To register, they may visit <makeadiff.in> or SMS <IMAD> <Name> <Email ID> <City> and send it to 92200 92200.
